🚀 HeatWave Now Supports MySQL Database 9.4.1

On August 25, 2025, Oracle announced that HeatWave now supports MySQL Database 9.4.1, the latest Innovation release. This version comes with critical security fixes, bug patches, and powerful feature enhancements that make HeatWave faster, smarter, and more efficient.

What’s New in 9.4.1

1. Improved Query Performance

  • InnoDB Statistics Cache optimizations lead to faster query execution.

  • Applications that rely on analytics and reporting will see reduced latency and improved throughput.

2. HeatWave Lakehouse Enhancements

  • Event-based automatic incremental load is now supported on OCI.

  • This means data tables loaded from Object Storage can refresh automatically, keeping your data pipelines up to date without manual intervention.

3. HeatWave GenAI

  • Introducing the new NL_SQL routine.

  • Developers can now generate SQL queries directly from natural language statements - simplifying analytics for non-SQL experts and accelerating query development.

4. HeatWave AutoML

  • Enhanced data preparation with NL2ML.

  • Allows you to automatically clean, prepare, and transform data for model training and testing — saving time and reducing errors in the machine learning workflow.

Upgrade Path

  • New DB Systems → You can now select MySQL 9.4.1 when provisioning a new HeatWave instance.

  • Existing DB Systems → Manual upgrade is required (e.g., from 9.4.0 → 9.4.1). Always ensure you take a backup before upgrading.

Innovation vs LTS vs Bugfix

Oracle offers three release tracks:

  • Innovation Release (9.4.x) → Latest features, enhancements, and improvements. Ideal if you want to adopt the newest technologies.

  • Long-Term Support (8.4.x) → Stable for applications requiring consistency over time.

  • Bugfix Release (8.0.x) → For workloads needing proven stability with only bug and security fixes.

If your business needs the latest AI, Lakehouse, and performance capabilities, 9.4.1 Innovation is the release to adopt. If you need rock-solid stability, LTS or Bugfix may be more suitable.

Why Upgrade to 9.4.1?

  • Faster query performance → Better user experience for analytics apps.

  • Smarter Lakehouse refresh → Automated data pipelines.

  • GenAI-driven SQL → Democratized access to data.

  • Better AutoML prep → Quicker, cleaner model building.

✨ With HeatWave 9.4.1, you get more performance, more automation, and more intelligence — all while staying secure and up to date.
